Feedback Thoughts Week 2

The first article I read was called, "Why rejection hurts so much-and what to do about it" by Guy Winch. The article was very interesting because it starts off with the question of why rejection hurts. It discusses how our brains are wired a certain way that makes rejection hurt as we were experiencing some kind of physical pain. The article then talks about a possible theory of why our brains are wired this way and how it could be because of an adaptation we acquired to let us know when others might try to kick us out from their lives. The article also talks about ways to not let rejection get the best of us such as not being so hard on ourselves and truly knowing our own self-worth.

The second article I read was titled, "Seven Ways to Crush Self-Doubt in Creative Work" by John Spencer. It starts off with the author discussing some of his first-hand encounters with self-doubt. He then goes on to list many tips and tricks to help people free themselves from the grasp of self-doubt. Some of his strategies include setting goals and being vulnerable to some sort of community. I really liked when the author talked about finding a community to share your goals and struggles to. There's power behind vulnerability and knowing that it's ok to not always be ok.

I personally think that feedback is very important. I agree with what our professor, Laura Gibbs, was mentioning. She talked about how school today encourages many students to try to get a certain grade and doesn't encourage students to take chances and make mistakes without getting penalized. I think some people occasionally mistake feedback for rejection. Sometimes when people give us feedback, it feels like they are rejecting our thoughts and feelings. However, like the first article mentioned, we can't be so hard on ourselves and we also need to embrace the growth mindset as mentioned in the second article.

The most important feedback is sometimes not always the easiest to hear. However, it's important to assess the feedback you are given and find out how to grow from it. Not all feedback has to be utilized, but I do think other people can see things that you might not be able to, which is great when you need feedback from someone about something that you would like to improve on. No matter the feedback you receive, whether it's positive or negative, it's important to take into consideration the feedback you receive and learn how to grow from it. I think it's important to not ever be too hard on yourself and know your worth but to always try and use feedback to make a better version of yourself.
